THE BASEMENT DEMOS

"THE BASEMENT DEMOS" is the debut mixtape by WESTHILL, a hip-hop collective from Ottawa, Ontario, released on December 25th, 2022, exclusively on Soundcloud. The project quickly gained traction, amassing over 3,000 streams since its release despite the group's amateur-level experience and opting for minimal marketing. The mixtape includes standout singles such as "COSTA RICA," "THE SPINS," and "BACK2THEBANDO," showcasing WESTHILL's unique blend of hip-hop influences and raw, unfiltered sound.

I played a significant role in "THE BASEMENT DEMOS" by both featuring on the mixtape and leading the creative direction of the project. My responsibilities included directing and designing the single and mixtape covers, directing and editing the accompanying music videos, and spearheading the minimal, yet effective, promotion of the mixtape. Accompanying the release of the mixtape was a 40-minute documentary, compiling footage taken during the mixtape creation process, entirely directed and edited by myself. I was the key contributor and final decision-maker on tracklisting, overall sound, and aesthetic of the project. Despite working with a zero-dollar budget, I ensured every aspect of the mixtape was cohesive and meticulously crafted to reflect the collective's artistic vision.
